If you plan on flying a above 55lb drone in the United States, you will need to obtain an FAA Class 3 Medical Certificate. This certification ensures that you meet the minimum medical standards required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Each Remote Pilot employed by your business is also required to hold a current FAA Class III Medical certificate. A Class III Medical certificate is good for between 24-60 months (2 to 5 years), depending on the pilot’s age. If the pilot is under 40 the certificate will last 5 years. If the pilot is 40 or older, the certificate will last 2 years. The one exception to this rule is if the pilot turns 40 and the certificate is already older than 2 years. For instance, if the pilot is granted a certificate at 37 years old, the certificate will expire at age 40 and will require renewal.

Complete the MedXPress Application

The FAA requires applicants to complete an online form through MedXPress before visiting an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). Here’s how:

  1. Create an account or log in if you already have one.

  2. Fill out the FAA's application providing accurate medical history and personal details.

  3. Submit the application and receive a confirmation number, which you will need to print off for your medical examination.

Schedule an Examination with an AME

Once you’ve completed the MedXPress application, schedule an appointment with an FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). You can find an AME near you by using the FAA’s AME Locator Tool on their website or by using a third-party website like AME Foresight.

Note: You must complete your medical exam within 60 days of submitting your application on the MedXPress website. If more than 60 days pass, you'll need to submit a new application.

Undergo the Medical Examination

Important Note: Remember to bring your MedXPress confirmation number and copies of any medical records if applicable.

During your exam, the AME will evaluate:

  • Vision: You must have at least 20/40 vision in each eye (with or without correction) and be able to distinguish colors necessary for safe flight.

  • Hearing: You should be able to hear a conversational voice at a specified distance.

  • Blood Pressure: Generally, your blood pressure should be within a healthy range.

  • Medical History Review: Any past medical conditions, surgeries, or medications will be discussed.

  • General Physical Examination: The AME will assess overall health, neurological function, and other key indicators.

Receive Your Certificate

If you meet all the requirements, the AME will issue your Class 3 Medical Certificate on the spot. If there are any medical concerns, your application may be deferred to the FAA for further review.
